The Cricket Cranes are yet to score 200 runs in an innings at the ongoing World Cricket League Division Three in Oman.Having opted to bat first, Uganda again found runs hard to come by at the top of the order as none of their top three scored more than 11.Skipper Brian Masaba (21), Nakrani and Deusdedit Muhumuza (16) provided some resistance in the middle overs but the spin of Shem Ngoche and seamers of Sachin Bhudia kept the run rate below four.At 33/3 in response, the Kenyan chase looked in trouble. But skipper Irfan Karim (59 not out) steadied the ship alongside first Rakep Patel (22) and then Nelson Odhiambo (53 not out) as they cruised to a six-wicket victory. Ex-England captain Terry retires from football

first_imgNow the Birmingham club reportedly want him to join their coaching staff as part of a new-look set-up, with Thierry Henry in the running to take over as manager at Villa Park after Steve Bruce was sacked earlier this week.“After 23 incredible years as a footballer, I have decided now is the right time to retire from playing,” Terry said in a message posted on his Instagram account.Terry, capped 78 times by England, recently rejected a chance to play for Spartak Moscow, saying a move to Russia was not right for his family. His last game as a professional was Villa’s 1-0 Championship play-off final defeat by Fulham in May — a loss that denied Villa a return to the Premier League. But his club career will be best remembered for his time at Chelsea where he won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, as well as the Champions League and Europa League, although he did not play in the two European finals.– ‘Best decision’ –“As a 14-year-old, I made my best and biggest decision: to sign for Chelsea Football Club,” added Terry, who also thanked his family for their support.“Words will never be enough to show how much everyone at the club means to me, in particular the fans…I hope I have done you all proud wearing the shirt and the armband.”John Terry in action for Chelsea, the club he represented for most of his career © AFP / OLLY GREENWOODHe also referenced his time at Villa by saying: “It was a privilege to represent such a renowned football club with great fans.“I look forward to the next chapter in my life and the challenges ahead.”Terry made 717 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 67 goals, and was widely regarded as one of the best English centre-halves of his generation. But in 2011 he was accused of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand, the brother of Terry’s England central defensive partner Rio Ferdinand, during a west London derby against Queens Park Rangers.Terry was absolved of criminal charges during a 2012 court case. But the Football Association, who had stripped Terry of the England captaincy while they waited for the case to be resolved, subsequently imposed a four-game ban and fine on the defender. The decision by the FA, English football’s governing body, to pursue disciplinary action after the court case led to Terry’s retirement from international football.Meanwhile Terry was widely ridiculed when, after Chelsea beat Bayern Munich to win the 2012 Champions League final, he appeared in full playing kit for the post-match celebrations despite not taking part in the game because of suspension.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Terry captained Aston Villa last season as they lost to Fulham in the Championship play-off final © AFP/File / Ian KINGTONLONDON, United Kingdom, Oct 7 – Former England captain John Terry announced his retirement from football on Sunday with the 37-year-old central defender now set to pursue a career in management.Terry, who spent the bulk of his career with Chelsea, captained second-tier Aston Villa last season.last_img read more

Uefa Champions league starts today

first_imgBarcelona are looking forward to Lionel Messi. The UEFA champions league season is getting under way this evening. PML Daily’s Shaban Lubega takes you through the action today.Manchester United(Eng) vs FC Basel(Swi).Old Trafford, Manchester.Refree: Ruddy Buquet(France).Jose Mourinho will lead Manchester United in the champions league for the first time this evening against a side that they have never beaten at home.United used the Europa league route to confirm their participation in the champions league this season after finishing sixth in the league last season. Both teams (United and Basel) have drawn all of their games at the famous Old Trafford stadium. United are on the back of a two all draw with Stock city in the league, the first points they have drawn all season having won their first three games. For the home game against Basel, they are to be without the suspended pair of Eric Baily and Phil Jones which means Swedish defender Victor Lindolf will most likely partner Chris Smalling at the heart of the defence. The only injury concerns are Luke Shaw and Ashley Young but Maroune Fellaini is subject to a late fitness test after over coming an injury that ruled him out of Saturday’s draw away to Stock.Prediction:Manchester Utd 2-1 Basel.Although united have always found it hard against Basel in the past, Mourinho is a man who always seems to know how to get results against sides like Basel who are currently poor in terms of form having not won any of their last three games.Celtic(Sco) vs PSG(Fra)Celtic Park, GlasgowRefree: Daniel Orsato(Italy)With striker Leigh Griffiths passed fit for tonight’s encounter, Celtic have sure got a major boost for the visit of French giants PSG.Griffiths misses Friday’s 4-1 win over Hamilton Academical but will be expected to start as fellow striker Moussa Dembele has been ruled out along with defenders Dedryik Boyata and Erick Sviatchenko. The Scotish champions take on in form PSG who thrashed Metz on the same day 5-1 with their star trio of Kyrian Mbappe, Neymar Jr and Edinson Cavani all on the score sheet.PSG would want to go one better of last season when their where eliminated by Barcelona in the quater finals 6-5 on aggregate but tonights encounter comes too soon for midfielders Angel Di Maria and Javier Pastore who are both out injured.Marco Verrati is expected to start after missing the Metz game through suspension.Prediction:Celtic 1-3 PSG.If PSG are to be known as heavy wights in Europe, they should win games like this comfortably and thats what i see them doing tonight.Barcelona((Spa) vs Juventus(Ita)Camp Nou, BarcelonaRefree: Damir Skomina(Slovenia)A repeat of last season’s quater final in this one as French champions Juventus who eliminated Barcelona last season without conceeding a single goal travel to the Camp Nou on day one.Barcelona who are on top of the table in La liga nad four points clear of rivals Real Madrid start life in Europe minus Neymar. His replacement Ousman Dembele came off the bench and assisted Luis Suarez’s goal in the 5-0 drabbing of Espanyol on Saturday and is expected to start.Juventus are also on top in the Serie A and won easily over the weekend 3-0 against Chievo Verona despite resting several players. These two teams have face each other five times in the past with Barcelona winning only once in the champions league final 2015.Prediction:Barcelona 2-1 Juventus. With Juventus having lost only once in the last 15 games in the group stages, it will be hard to break them down but with Messi who scored a hattrick on Saturday on form, I see Barca edging this one.Chelsea(Eng) vs Qarabag(Arz)Stanford Bridge, LondonRefree: Anastasios Sidiropoulos(Greece).Chelsea return to the champions league after missing out last season and have lost only once in the last 13 in the group stages.Debutants Qarabag couldn’t have got a tougher test in thier firt game in the champions league than they will have on their hands today against English champions Chelsea.Qarabag won thier final qualification game on away goals against Copenhagen but this is a different test all together.Chelsea will have Edin Hazard on the bench tonight as he completes his recovery from a length lay out but captain Gary Cahill is expected to start after completing his domestic ban over the weekend.New signing Danny Drinkwater is still out nursing a calf injury so he is not expected to feature.Prediction:Chelsea 4-0 Qarabag. With only Qarabag’s travel to England ending in a 3-1 loss to Spurs, i dont see that changing as Chelsea will definatly over power them at Stanford bridge.Bayern(Ger) vs Anderlect(Bel).Allianz Arena, MunichRefree: Paolo Tagliavento.German champions go into the first game of the champions league on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. The last meeting between the two side came in 2008 as Anderlect won away to Bayern but alot has changed now and it will be a miracal sort of if they can do it again. This will surely be Carlo Anchelotti’s last season if he fails to win the European most coverted trophy having lost in the semi finals on all of thier last three occassions.Luckily for them, the oppostion in Anderlect are so poor at the moment having won only once in the last four games and that win coming over the weekend against Lokeren.Prediction:Bayern 4-1 Anderlect.Bayern are traditionally a strong side at home and i dont see that changing today against Anderlect.Benfica(Por) vs CSKA Moskova(Rus).Estadio do Sport, LisbonRefree: Alberto Undiano(Spain)Benfica have won all of the last three league titles in Portugal but have failed to replicate that form in Europe. They always seem to get out of the group and will need a clean start here against a CSKA Moskova side who dont always win away from home.CSKA eliminated Young Boys of Switzerland in the final round of qualifiers.Prediction:Benfica 2-0 CSKA MoskovaTraditionally, Portugues side are so sturbon at home and although Benfica lost two key players in the summer, i dont see CSKA causing an upset.Roma(Ita) vs Atheletico Madrid((Spa).Estadio Olympico, RomaRefree: Milorad Mazic(Serbia).Roma have not played competitive football in over two weeks now after thier league game against Sampdoria was post poned. It may be an advantage in a sense that they are the fresher of the two side with Athletico playing and drawing away to Valencia over the weekend.Athletico have become one of the strongest side in Europe of late and will surely pose a big threat tonight against the Romans. This will be the first meeting between the two sides.Prediction:Roma 0-0 Athletico Madrid.Atheletico always struggles away from home in Europe and i dont think today will be an exception.Roma on the other hand dont have enough power to take all three points and will surely struggle to find the back of the net.Olympiacos(Gre) vs Sporting Lisbon(Por).Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki, PiraeusRefree: Viktor Kassai. Two inform sides in Olympiakos and Sporting meet today in the first group game of the 2017/18 season. Both reams have won four of their last five in all competitions.Their only meeting was in a club friendly with Sporting winning 1-0.Prediction:Olympiakos 2-1 Sporting Lisbon. The Stadio Georgios is a hard place to play in especially when you are an away side. All I can see here is a home win as Sporting will surely find it difficult taking the initiativeCommentslast_img read more

Maties in motion

first_imgMatie students tackling the gruellingCape Argus tour.(Image: Stellenbosch University) The Matie bike was imported from theNetherlands, where cycling is a majorpastime and a way of life.(Image: SU blog) MEDIA CONTACTS • Martin Viljoen  Stellenbosch University media liaison  +27 21 808 4921 RELATED ARTICLES • Stellenbosch on a bicycle • Cape Town’s transport system lauded • Exploring bicycle culture in South Africa • Wine route celebrates 40 years • SA’s first hydrogen bike rolled outEmily van RijswijckThe University of Stellenbosch (SU) in the Western Cape has launched a cycling project to promote greener, more sustainable living on campus and, at the same time, resolve some of the university’s traffic problems. The cycling initiative was launched during SU’s Sustainability Day celebrations on 15 March, when 400 Matie bikes were made available for university students and staff to rent.To promote the initiative a cycle relay was held on the day, with teams of four and at least one member on a Matie bike.“Matie” is the nickname for the institution’s students, former students and staff. There are various theories as to its origin – some claim that it stems from the Afrikaans word “tamatie”, or tomato, a reference to the university’s maroon colours. However, the Afrikaans word “matie” is a version of the diminutive “maatjie”, meaning “friend”, and this is the more likely explanation.Towards sustainabilityThe scheme was announced by SU’s rector and vice-chancellor, Prof Russel Botman, who said the Matie bike project is part of the university’s contribution to a greener environment.“Worldwide, a mind shift has occurred. Humankind has realised that our natural resources are limited and that we cannot continue polluting our planet like we have been doing,” he said. The initiative is part of the HOPE Project, a university-wide campaign to create sustainable projects on campus. It also fits in with SU’s mobility plan, aimed at reducing the growing traffic and parking problems at the university. As part of these sustainability efforts, the university recently introduced a shuttle service, with park-and-ride facilities available at two sites and two bus routes doing service from 7.30am to 5pm each day.Students also play an active role in the HOPE Project.Every year the Student Representative Council manages the Eskom Energy Challenge, in which hostels compete against each other to see who can conserve the most energy and recycle the most waste. There is also an EcoMaties student organisation that promotes sustainability on campus through various awareness campaigns.SU has a Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies, which offers a post-graduate qualification in the field, as well as a number of short courses.Cycling routes“The overarching aim [of the cycling initiative] is to reduce motor vehicle traffic on campus and in the rest of Stellenbosch and to contribute to sustainability in this way,” says Martin Viljoen of the SU media liaison office.“The idea is to declare the whole campus cycle and pedestrian friendly.”Safe cycling routes will soon be part of the campus architecture, taking the SU back to the time when it was mostly a cycle and pedestrian campus. The first cycle route will be created in Victoria Street, with future campus routes linking up with similar routes that the municipality is planning for the rest of the town.A bicycle shed is available at the well-known campus cafeteria, Neelsie, and others will be erected elsewhere in the future. The Matie bikes come from the Netherlands, where they were used in a rent-a-bike scheme for train commuters. The two-wheelers were imported into South Africa by the Bicycling Empowerment Network South Africa (BEN), with the assistance of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.BEN, a countrywide initiative started in Cape Town in 2002, promotes the use of bicycles as a sustainable form of transport, especially in poorer communities. It imports used bicycles from abroad and helps cities to plan for and facilitate their use as part of urban management. The bikes can be rented from SU at R1 000 (US$131) a year, of which R600 ($79) will be refunded if they are returned in good working order. For more information, visit www.sun.ac.za/sustainability or email [email protected] or follow the effort on Twitter: #matiebike.Matie bikes tackle Argus To promote the cycling initiative before the formal launch a Matie bike team took part in the 2012 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, the largest timed cycling event in the world, on what they jokingly referred to as a “mission impossible”.The 110 km route runs along the Cape Peninsula and, apart from the many smaller uphills, has four extremely strenuous climbs which, on occasions, have to be tackled in the face of a gale-force south-easterly wind.Taking part in a race known as much for its high degree of difficulty because of its many climbs as for its breathtaking beauty, the eight-member Matie team, which included the Matie mascot Pokkel, challenged the notorious 169m Chapman’s Peak and the final Suikerbossie hill.Amidst the thousands of sleek, hi-tech machines, their success on their heavy, single-speed commuter bicycles, equipped with fat tyres and no gears, has been captured on YouTube. A student city The university is an integral part of the city of Stellenbosch, so traffic congestion and parking are city-wide problems, especially when the academic year is in full swing and the 18 000 students return to the campus. For its part, the City of Oaks, as Stellenbosch is also fondly known, is considered to be the heart of South Africa’s wine industry.Every year thousands of tourists converge on the quaint village-like town, with its majestic oak trees and Cape Dutch architecture, to savour some of the excellent wine and food produced by more than 200 establishments. The Stellenbosch wine route, the oldest in South Africa, celebrated its 40th birthday in 2011.last_img read more

South Africa stable on Ibrahim Index of African Governance

first_imgSouth Africa kept its fourth position out of 54 countries in the 2015 Ibrahim Index of African Governance, released on Monday, and edged up in the safety and rule of law category. South Africa’s ranking on the 2015 Ibrahim Index of African Governance didn’t remains at fourth spot as last year. Slight improvements have been made to the country’s rule of law and rural sector. (Images: Brand South Africa) • Piketty’s focus on inequality may also set a blueprint for the study of economics • We look up to you: Ibrahim • Active citizenship in South Africa at a healthy level • South Africa rises 7 places in annual WEF Global Competitiveness Index • What South Africa can learn from Piketty about addressing inequality Shamin ChibbaSouth Africa has kept its fourth position out of 54 countries on the Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), while gaining ground in the safety and rule of law category. According to the 2015 IIAG, released in London on Monday 5 October, the country’s overall score increased by 0.2 points from 72.8 in 2013 to 73 in 2014.This follows an improved performance in the 2015/16 World Economic Forum annual Global Competitiveness Index, released last week, which saw South Africa rise seven places from 56 to 49 of 140 countries. The Ibrahim Index ranks a country’s overall governance within the African context. It is organised into four distinct conceptual categories: economic opportunity, safety and rule of law, participation and human rights, and human development. The IIAG, produced annually since 2007, is one of the key initiatives the Mo Ibrahim Foundation – established by Sudanese-British mobile communications mogul Mo Ibrahim – uses to improve governance and leadership in Africa.Improved data this year allows South Sudan, Africa’s newest country, to be included in the index, together with its northern neighbour Sudan.South Africa’s law, safety improvingWithin the safety and rule of law category, South Africa’s increasing standards were reflected in the score, moving from 66.9 in 2013 to 68.4 in 2014.While the country’s business environment remains stable, its rural sector improved from 59.8 in the previous index to 62.3 this year.According to a statement from the Ibrahim Foundation, the gap in overall governance between the regions is widening, with Southern Africa still the best performing region with an average of 58.9. “[They are] followed by West Africa (52.4), North Africa (51.2) and East Africa (44.3). Central Africa is the lowest ranking region with an average score of 40.9, and is the only region to have deteriorated since 2011.”There has also been a marginal improvement in Africa’s overall governance. This is “underpinned by positive performances in only two categories, human development (+1.2) and participation and human Rights (+0.7)”. However, the index found both sustainable economic opportunity (-0.7) and safety and rule of law (-0.3) have deteriorated. Note that the ranking cannot be compared with previous years’ data. Annual refinements are made to the scores, and the entire IIAG dataset is revised retrospectively. Analysis above therefore draws comparisons between years based entirely on 2015 IIAG dataset. The metal inside is strong and it hold the hair well. Unfortunately, for me this did not work because my hair is very long( down to my waist) and curly=too much hair :). Very thin foam around the metal apart from that does the job. sourcingmap® 9.6″ Magic Sponge Bun Maker Curler Hair Ponytail Holder BlackProduct Name : Ponytail Bun Holder;Features : Sponge Coated Flexible Metal WireSize : 24.5 x 4cm / 9.6″ x 1.6″(L * W);Main Color : BlackMaterial : Metal Wire, SpongeWeight : 11gPackage Content : 1 x Ponytail Bun Holder The idea is great but i think my hair is too thin and i find it a bit difficult fiddling with my hair at the back of my head – probably more because of my disabilities rather than there is anything wrong with the product. Now Facebook Can Beam Targeted Ads At You Wherever You Are

first_imgRelated Posts Tags:#Ads#Facebook#Facebook Audience Network Facebook’s own advertising network is finally here. Today at Facebook’s F8 developer conference, the company announced the social network is officially launching a way for developers and publishers to distribute Facebook ads in third-party applications.Called the Facebook Audience Network, the ad network will use Facebook data to target users with personalized advertisements across a wide range range of non-Facebook apps. These ads will be similar to the targeted commercial messages they already see on the social network itself; now they’ll just be everywhere.Facebook began testing an ad network in January with a handful of partners, and is rolling it out to developers and publishers today.News of Facebook’s ad network leaked last week, although Facebook played them down at the time. Just last week COO Sheryl Sandberg claimed the company was in “very early testing for a mobile ad network.”A Booming Ad BusinessFacebook’s mobile advertising business is on a tear—it now accounts for almost 60 percent of the company’s overall ad revenue. And even as Facebook’s user growth has plateaued in countries like the U.S. and Canada, advertising revenues continue to climb.A large chunk of that revenue comes from app install ads—advertisements that prompt users to download an application right from an advertisement. Those ads have been so successful for Facebook, other companies like Twitter and Yahoo are following suit. The Facebook Audience Network will compete with Google’s AdMob advertising network that places targeted Google ads on third-party sites and apps. But Facebook’s advantage is that the social network has a much richer trove of personal information and can provide advertisers with better-targeted advertisements.A Boon For DevelopersMany developers are already building apps using Facebook developer tools. Parse, the backend-as-a-service startup Facebook acquired last year, makes it easier for developers to build multi-platform applications. Facebook Login, a tool that allows users to login to applications and websites with their Facebook information, powers more than half of total social logins online, according to a report from social analytics firm Gigya. Many developers are looking forward to creating and distributing Facebook-powered ads.“A lot of users use Facebook Login, and if developers can leverage that information and complete the loop using Facebook to source the personal information from that person, and leverage that to connect with ads for Facebook, that can be extremely powerful,” Ashish Toshniwal, CEO of Y Media Labs, told ReadWrite in an interview.Facebook Audience Network will allow developers to bring all their app-building strategies under one roof, giving Facebook the power to help build, manage, and monetize apps each step of the way. With Facebook Login, developers already have some idea of the demographic data behind their users. With targeted advertising, those app users will see more relevant ads as they go from app to app.Image courtesy of Selena Larson for ReadWrite selena larson The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videoscenter_img Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Auditlast_img read more

The Leadership Playbook: On Managerial Will

first_imgCompensation is one way to drive behavior and produce the outcome you need, as limited as it may be by itself. Having plans and metrics can also guide behaviors and help produce the outcomes you need. These levers, as much as we like to employ them, are not as powerful as the underutilized method for getting things done: managerial will.Managerial will is a combination of leadership and accountability.Be the Leader Your Team NeedsManagerial will is the leadership to tell your people that you are going to take the hill, and then driving the action to actually take the hill. Regardless of compensation. Regardless of plans and metrics. You achieve the goal through your personal leadership. You establish the goal, and you employ all your resources, including time, energy, money, and people in achieving that goal. Come hell or high water.Inspect and AdjustThe second part of managerial will is holding people accountable for their role in achieving the goal. You ask them about their progress. And then you ask them again. When they’re struggling, you help remove the obstacles to their performance. You coach them. You help them with whatever will enable them to do their part in producing the results you need them to produce as part of the larger goal.Without the leadership component to managerial will, compensation and other levers rarely produce the results desired. If you had to choose between the two, managerial will is the safer bet—especially with a great actualized leader.Without the accountability component, you will achieve results that are far less than what you are capable of producing. This resistance to managerial will comes from the great—and real—fear that people will be hurt when managerial will is exercised by an unenlightened dominator who makes poor leadership choices. But this too stems from a lack of managerial will, namely that of the manager’s leader in allowing bad behavior.Managerial will, when exercised by a thoughtful, enlightened, caring leader is a force multiplier that allows their team to outproduce larger, better-resourced competitors who lack this discipline.last_img read more
