FRISCO, Texas – McNeese’s Tyler Smith and Houston Baptist’s Christopher Welch are the Southland Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.Smith’s league recognition is the first for the Cowboys in the outdoor season, while Welch’s honor is the second for the Huskies after decathlete Scott Boon claimed the award last week.Welch, a freshman, posted a Southland-best triple jump of 15.73 meters (51-7.25) to claim top honors in this weekend’s Houston Alumni Invitational hosted by the University of Houston at the Carl Lewis International Complex.Meanwhile, Smith’s running this weekend earned him a first-place medal in the 200-meter race to go with another gold garnered by his 4 x 100 relay squad at the McNeese Spring Time Classic in Lake Charles, La.Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week: Tyler Smith, McNeese – Sr. – Stonewall, La.Smith posted a new personal-best of 21.0 seconds in his 200-meter race win. The time gives him the fifth-best mark in the Southland this season and is tied for the 46th-best posting nationally.The senior was also a part of the winning 4 x 100 meter relay team that broke the tape at 41.08 seconds.Honorable Mention: Ryan Cleary, Abilene Christian; Chris Jefferson, Sam Houston State.Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Christopher Welch, Houston Baptist – Fr. – Dickinson, TexasWelch’s winning leap bettered the runner-up competitor’s jump by more than a foot and a half. The output represents the seventh-best jump in the West region and 13th best in the NCAA this season.
